Resident vs citizen of Poland

WTP Finance looks at products from the perspective of a person living in Poland, regardless of citizenship. What matters is where you live, not which passport you hold.

A few terms that are easy to confuse

  • Citizenship — your country of nationality (for example a citizen of Ukraine, India, or an EU country). It does not by itself decide whether you can open a product in Poland.
  • Residence (stay) — the fact that you live in Poland. This is our perspective.
  • Tax residency — where you settle your taxes; sometimes required in declarations. It is not the same as citizenship or simply living somewhere.
  • PESEL — the Polish personal ID number; sometimes required to open an account.
  • Residence permit — a document of legal stay (especially for people from outside the EU).
  • Polish address / phone number — common, minor onboarding requirements.

Why it affects your choice

A Polish citizen and a foreigner living in Poland do not always have the same options to open a product — different products accept different documents.

Watch out

Providers rarely publish full eligibility rules for non-citizens. Always confirm your specific case with the provider before opening an account.
