A bank account without a PESEL number — is it possible?

Definition

When a PESEL number is required to open an account and when other documents are enough — and how to read this in the comparison.

What it means in practice

PESEL is the Polish national identification number. Not having one can be a real barrier right after you arrive, before you obtain it. Our verified data shows two typical approaches:

  • Some institutions require a PESEL to open an account (more often traditional Polish banks).
  • Some accept just a passport or an EU document / residence permit and do not require a PESEL at the start (more often EU fintechs).

Why it affects your choice

If you do not yet have a PESEL, this field often decides which account you can open now and which only after you obtain one. You can get a PESEL separately (e.g. during registration of residence / at the office) — an account without a PESEL is often a bridge solution, not a final choice made for you.

How to check it in our comparison

In the currency accounts comparison every entry has a verified "PESEL" field (required / not required / alternative accepted) and accepted documents — with a source and a "Checked" date. The order is alphabetical, not a ranking — we do not point to a "best" option.

Watch out

The PESEL requirement is often unpublished and changeable, and "not required at the start" does not mean "never needed" (some features or tax settlements may require it later). Confirm your own case with the provider before registering.

We do not give legal or financial advice and do not point to a "best" institution. Whether a product requires a PESEL, confirm with the provider. WTP Finance is for information only.
