Online or in a branch? Account access for foreigners
Definition
Why some institutions let a foreigner open an account fully remotely while others require a branch visit — and how to read this in the comparison.
What it means in practice
How you open the account is one of the most important facts for someone living in Poland without Polish citizenship. In practice there are two typical routes:
- Traditional Polish banks — for a foreigner (especially from outside the EU) account opening often happens in a branch, with a full set of documents (ID, proof of residence and address, sometimes income) and usually a Polish phone number and address.
- EU fintechs / e-money institutions — onboarding is usually fully remote (in the app), and the gate is legal residency in a supported country, not citizenship.
Why it affects your choice
If you do not yet have a Polish address, a phone number, or time for a branch visit, the "fully online" route is often simply the only feasible one to start. That does not make it "better" — the protection of your money also differs (deposit guarantee at a bank vs safeguarding at an EMI). These are two different things; judge them separately.
How to check it in our comparison
In the currency accounts comparison every entry has verified "online opening", "Polish citizenship" and "residence permit / karta pobytu" fields — with a source and a "Checked" date. The "Online opening" filter narrows the list to institutions with remote onboarding. The order is alphabetical, not a ranking — we do not point to a "best" option.
Watch out
This is a typical pattern, not a rule without exceptions — banks are increasingly digital, and a fintech may ask for extra documents (e.g. a valid residence permit). Requirements for non-citizens and non-EU residents are often unpublished and changeable. Always confirm your own case with the provider before opening an account.
We do not give immigration or financial advice and do not point to a "best" institution. Confirm acceptance of your documents and the account-opening method with the provider. WTP Finance is for information only.
