IKE and IKZE for a foreigner living in Poland
Definition
IKE and IKZE are Polish retirement accounts with tax benefits (more: IKE vs IKZE). This explainer answers one question: whether a foreigner resident in Poland can use them and what is needed for that.
What it means in practice
As a rule yes — a foreigner living and filing taxes in Poland can open an IKE and IKZE. The tax relief is not reserved for Polish citizens; it is tied to settling tax in Poland, not to your passport. Three things are key:
- PESEL number — needed for filing taxes in Poland (applies to citizens and foreigners alike). If you don't have one, you can apply for it yourself at the municipal office. See PESEL and account without a PESEL.
- Filing tax in Poland — to use the IKZE deduction from income, you file an annual tax return in Poland.
- Tax residence — the full IKZE benefit is tied to being a Polish tax resident: you have your centre of personal/economic interests in Poland or you stay here more than 183 days a year. Note: a PESEL alone does not determine tax residence.
Why it affects your choice
If you live and work in Poland, IKE/IKZE is the same retirement-saving option as for a citizen — it is often overlooked by migrants because it seems "only for Poles". The investing comparison shows which broker offers IKE/IKZE accounts (some foreign brokers do not — see foreign broker and PIT).
How to check this in our comparison
In the Investing lens each entry has an "IKE / IKZE accounts" field and tax-settlement information — with source and "Checked" date. Order is alphabetical, not a ranking.
Watch out
Tax residence and the right to relief depend on your individual situation (where you work, where you pay taxes, double-taxation treaties). If you work or pay taxes partly abroad, the consequences can differ — confirm your case with a tax adviser or the tax office before opening an account. Contribution limits change every year.
We do not give tax or financial advice and do not indicate the "best" solution. Confirm your right to relief and your tax residence with an adviser or the tax office. WTP Finance is for information only.
